  Helping Health Care Students

One of CAHEC’s most important objectives is to increase the number of health care professionals serving communities in Northern Colorado, especially in rural and underserved areas. An important part of this effort is to encourage students studying for health care related degrees to provide their services in the region after they have completed their education.

One strategy for accomplishing this is through the University of Colorado’s School of Medicine’s preceptor program. Preceptors are practicing doctors, nurses, pharmacists and other health care providers who are willing to supervise a four week clinical rotation for students.

The CU Schools of Medicine, Pharmacy, Dentistry, and Nursing participate in this program, along with Red Rocks Community College and Rocky Vista University. During the rotation, the students observe all aspects of the preceptors’ activities; an experience that is a very important aspect of their education.

CAHEC continually helps recruit preceptors from communities throughout its 10-county region. The schools then match students with preceptors and establish educational guidelines and goals. To help make the student’s experience easier, CAHEC also provides them with housing (see Clinical Rotation & Housing tab) in CAHEC owned apartments or in pre-approved private “host” homes in the communities where they participate in their rotation.

To further broaden the students’ involvement in their local communities, CAHEC also arranges for them to participate in community service experiences (see Service Learning tab) such as providing free screenings at local health fairs or visiting local schools to teach students about health care careers. CAHEC believes this program not only helps provide students with an important educational experience but it also exposes them to the professional and personal satisfaction that can be enjoyed by providing their services to rural residents after earning their degrees. During 2009, 130 students participated in clinical rotations throughout the region.

In addition, the organization maintains an online directory of other scholarships that are available to high school graduates planning to enter the health care field as well as students studying a health care profession. CLICK HERE for the free online scholarship manual.
