PAM GILLEN, ND, RN, CACIII is is the Project Coordinator for Fetal Alcohol Syndrome and Other Prenatal Substance Abuse Prevention Project, utilizing the Colorado Area Health Education Center system and the University of Colorado Health Sciences Center system to provide program services to all regions of the state. She has over 25 years experiences in the Health and Human Services field. Dr. Gillen is the Principle Investigator on a Colorado ADAD FASD prevention grant and SAMHSA FASD Juvenile Justice Prevention grant. She is a national trainer for FASD Center of Excellence and one of their steering committee members. She has practiced as a public health nurse, a nurse coordinator, and a case manager for at risk pregnancies working with high-risk women of childbearing age to help prevent Prenatal alcohol and drug exposed infants. Dr. Gillen is an expert clinician, curriculum author, presenter, trainer, and counselor in crisis intervention/treatment of drug and alcohol addiction issues.

Overview
The goals of the course are:

  1. To gain an in-depth understanding of Fetal Alcohol Spectrum Disorder (FASD)
  2. To help prevent FASD with substance abusing women of childbearing age.

Objectives
At the end of this seminar participants should be able to:

  1. State an increase in knowledge on teratogenic effects of prenatal alcohol exposure and the multifactoral influences that play a role in causing the disability.
  2. Explain the current screening tools used in the diagnosis of FASD.
  3. Describe three specific collaborative roles that human service providers and health care providers play in working with substance abusing women and alcohol exposed children.
  4. Identify four specific concerns that parents of alcohol affected individuals have around the patterns of behavior or cognitive abnormalities that are
    inconsistent with the developmental levels across the life span.
